Aqua Man Jason Momoa Turns SUP Designer
“If you asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I wanted to be a surfer. I'm massively thankful to collaborate with The Surfboard Warehouse and build these beautiful environmentally sustainable surfboards.” - Jason Momoa
When actor Jason Momoa wandered into the Surfboard Warehouse at North Burleigh on the Gold Coast looking for a stand-up paddleboard, while filming the Hollywood blockbuster Aquaman, he could have had little idea the events he was setting in motion.
Struck by the Atlantis brand of paddleboard, he came up with an idea – to collaborate with TSBW on his own signature series of SUPs. A year-long journey with TSBW saw them develop a unique design and construction, featuring environmentally friendly paulownia timber, epoxy resin, reconstituted deck grip and laser-etched Polynesian motifs.
“It’s very special to me because my father was at a point in his life where he couldn’t surf anymore because of an accident and I started paddle boarding and brought it to him and that really re-united us so that we could surf together,” says Jason. “It’s really a dream come true and I wanted to bring it home to Makaha and show my uncles.”
Jason’s “uncles” just happen to include some of the most legendary figures in Hawaiian surfing – Makaha patriarch Buffalo Keaulana, his sons, Brian and Rusty, Mel Pu’u. “It was one of the greatest days of my life standing there with that lineage of my uncles there.”
From Burleigh to Makaha, from Hollywood movie sets to soulful surf sessions with Hawaiian royalty, Jason’s fateful visit to The Surfboard Warehouse has rippled across the world in the best possible way.
